DGCA Orders IndiGo to Reduce 5% of Flights Amid Operational Crisis
IndiGo flight reduction by DGCA: New Delhi, December 09: India’s largest airline, IndiGo, is facing a major operational challenge as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) directed the airline to cut 5% of its scheduled flights. The move comes after rising complaints over delays, cancellations, and passenger inconvenience across multiple airports.
Although IndiGo has built a strong reputation over its 20-year journey, the airline has been struggling with punctuality and service reliability since December 2. The sudden spike in flight schedules reportedly impacted operational efficiency, leading to widespread disruptions.
Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu confirmed that certain winter schedule flight slots allocated to IndiGo will be withdrawn and redistributed among other airlines to ensure smoother operations.
110 Daily Flights to Be Cancelled
IndiGo currently operates around 2,200 domestic and international flights daily. Following the DGCA directive, the airline will reduce approximately 110 flights per day. The regulator ordered IndiGo to submit its revised flight schedule by Wednesday evening.
A high-level review meeting was held at Rajiv Bhavan on Tuesday, where key issues such as passenger refunds, customer support, and service quality were discussed. Authorities emphasized the need for long-term corrective measures to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
Government Monitoring Airports
In response to the crisis, the Ministry of Civil Aviation deployed ten senior officials across major airports to closely monitor ground-level situations. These officials will remain on duty for the next two to three days to ensure minimal inconvenience to passengers.
Earlier, Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu had warned of strict action against IndiGo if service disruptions continued. Soon after the warning, the DGCA implemented the 5% flight reduction order.
The government has assured passengers that steps are being taken to stabilise operations and improve service quality, with a strong focus on passenger safety and comfort.
