Cyclone Ditva: Sri Lanka Floods Kill 56, High Alert as Storm Moves Toward India

Sri Lanka is facing one of its worst natural disasters in recent years as Cyclone Ditva causes continuous heavy rainfall, floods, and landslides across several provinces. At least 56 people have died, and 21 remain missing, according to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).

Deadly Landslide in Badulla District

A major landslide struck overnight in Badulla district, an area known for its tea plantations, destroying several homes and killing 21 residents. Search and rescue teams are still working amid dangerous conditions.

Transport Disrupted & Towns Submerged

Floodwaters have inundated many towns, with videos circulating on social media showing homes washed away.

Most train services across Sri Lanka have been suspended

Key roads connecting provinces are closed

Thousands are stranded or displaced

The DMC reports that around 44,000 people have been directly affected by the severe weather, while 20,500 security personnel are engaged in relief operations.

Cyclone Ditva Expected to Hit India’s East Coast

Meteorologists confirm that Ditva began as a deep depression over the East Coast and has now intensified into a cyclone.

The storm is expected to move along Sri Lanka’s eastern coastline and could make landfall in India soon, increasing concerns for coastal areas in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Red Alert Along the Kelani River

As river levels continue to rise, the Irrigation Department issued a red alert for low-lying regions surrounding the Kelani River, including Colombo.

Some northern and central regions of Sri Lanka may receive over 200 mm of rainfall, increasing the risk of further flash floods and landslides.

Worst Flooding in Years

Even though it’s the monsoon season, experts say this level of disaster is unusual.

The last major flood tragedy occurred in June 2003, when 254 lives were lost, and millions were displaced.

Authorities Urge Caution

People in vulnerable zones are advised to:

Move to higher ground

Stay updated with weather alerts

Avoid flooded roads and railway tracks
