Vande Mataram: PM Modi Calls It the Vision of Independent India
PM Narendra Modi on Vande Mataram: Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Vande Mataram as more than a patriotic slogan, calling it the soul and vision of a free India during a special discussion in the Lok Sabha. Addressing Parliament, he said the song ignited the spirit of resistance against British rule and became a symbol of national awakening.
The discussion was held to mark the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, with ten hours allotted for the debate. Prime Minister Modi began the session at noon, calling the moment a historic and proud occasion for the country. He said remembering such a sacred song is a divine blessing and an inspiration for future generations.
Vande Mataram as the Strength of the Freedom Movement
PM Modi highlighted that Vande Mataram was not merely a chant but a powerful motivational force during India’s freedom struggle. He stated that the slogan strengthened revolutionaries, inspired mass participation, and echoed across the nation even in the darkest periods of colonial oppression.
He added that the slogan created fear among the British rulers and gave courage to countless freedom fighters. According to him, it represented sacrifice, discipline, and a deep sense of devotion to the motherland.
British Suppression and Historical Context
Prime Minister Modi recalled that the British authorities tried to suppress Vande Mataram when it was first written. The colonial government attempted to impose the British anthem God Save the Queen and discouraged Indians from singing patriotic Indian songs.
He pointed out that when Vande Mataram completed 50 years, India remained under British control. When it marked its 100th year, the nation was passing through the difficult period of the Emergency, reflecting how the slogan remained relevant in different phases of Indian history.
