Will Virat Kohli’s Back Pain Endanger 2027 ODI World Cup Hopes?

Virat Kohli’s back pain: Almost everyone knows Virat Kohli as the backbone of Team India’s ODI lineup. Having retired from Test and T20 cricket, he now focuses solely on ODIs — and recently delivered a stellar performance against South Africa. In the first ODI in Ranchi, Kohli smashed a majestic 135 off 120 balls (with 11 fours and 7 sixes), reaffirming his reputation as a run machine.

However, during the same series — in the match where he scored 93 — he reportedly felt back pain and underwent examination by team physios. Rumours on social media have since spread that this could impact his chances of playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

That said, this is not the first time Kohli has battled back issues. In 2014, he endured persistent back pain that severely affected his routine. With the help of former strength and conditioning coach Basu Shankar, he underwent a fitness regimen including weight training — a move that eventually helped him regain strength and rise to become one of the fittest cricketers globally.

Given his recent century and match-winning innings, signs suggest Kohli is still quite capable on the field. If he manages his fitness and recovery prudently, there’s a good chance he could continue playing ODIs up to and including the 2027 World Cup. However, recurring back problems remain a concern.

Only time will tell whether this latest bout of pain becomes a long-term issue or just a temporary setback.
