Trump’s Double Standards: US Sanctions India While Quietly Trading with Russia

US Tariffs on India Over Russian Trade

In a controversial move, US President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Indian imports, citing India’s continued purchase of Russian oil and defense equipment. He warned of further penalties if India doesn’t halt its trade with Moscow. However, trade data reveals a stark contradiction: America itself continues to import billions worth of goods from Russia, despite its sanctions.

US-Russia Trade: The Hidden Numbers

Despite public criticism, the US imported over $3.5 billion worth of goods from Russia in 2024, including:

Uranium hexafluoride for nuclear energy

Palladium for electric vehicles

Fertilizers for agriculture

Machinery, chemicals, and timber

In 2025 (so far), US imports from Russia have already crossed $2 billion, while exports to Russia stand at $232 million

India’s Response: Trade Based on National Interest

India has firmly stated that its trade decisions are driven by economic security and strategic needs, not political pressure. The import of Russian crude oil has helped India save nearly ₹1 lakh crore annually, easing its energy burden.

In July 2025 alone, 36% of India’s crude oil imports came from Russia, underscoring its importance in India’s energy strategy

India-US Trade Snapshot

Total bilateral trade (2024–25): $186 billion

India’s exports to US: $86 billion (goods), $29 billion (services)

India’s imports from US: $45 billion (goods), $26 billion (services)

India’s key exports to the US include pharmaceuticals, telecom equipment, petroleum products, gems and jewelry, garments, and auto parts.

Trade Deal Stalemate & US Pressure Tactics

Experts say Trump’s frustration stems from India’s refusal to accept US dairy and genetically modified agricultural products, citing public health concerns. Despite five rounds of trade talks, no deal has been finalized. The recent tariff hike is seen as a pressure tactic to force India’s compliance
