Telangana: Weekly Schedule — When Are the Sarpanch Elections?
The Telangana Election Commission is gearing up to conduct the Panchayat and Sarpanch elections across the state. According to official sources, the election schedule is expected to be released within a week, and all arrangements are being finalized in coordination with district authorities.
Three-Phase Election Plan
The State Election Commission (SEC) has proposed conducting the Panchayat elections in three phases, aiming to complete the entire election process between December 10 and December 20.
As per the current plan, the likely polling dates are:
- December 11
- December 14
- December 17
These dates may be confirmed when the official notification is released.
Elections After Prajapalana Week
A key decision regarding the timing of Panchayat elections was taken during the recent state cabinet meeting. The government decided that polls should be conducted only after completing the Prajapalana Week, an important governance initiative happening from:
December 1 to December 9
Therefore, the Panchayat and Sarpanch elections will be held shortly after this period.
High-Level Meeting With District Collectors
The SEC recently held a detailed review meeting with all district collectors to discuss election arrangements. During this meeting, the commission issued strict instructions to ensure a smooth, transparent, and error-free polling process.
Legal Background: MPTC & ZPTC Reservation Issue
Earlier, the government issued an ordinance to increase BC reservations in local body elections, after which the SEC released the MPTC and ZPTC election notification. However:
The High Court struck down the notification stating reservations cannot exceed 50%.
Due to this ruling, the elections were postponed.
The Court has now directed the government to clarify its stand by the 24th of this month.
