Shiva 4K Pre Release Review: A Classic Reborn
Shiva, one of Telugu cinema’s most iconic and trendsetting films, is returning to the big screen after 36 years in a brand-new 4K remastered version with Dolby Atmos sound. Originally released on October 5, 1989, this cult classic marked the directorial debut of Ram Gopal Varma and revolutionized the way Telugu films were made.
Produced by Akkineni Venkat and Yarlagadda Surendra under the banners of Annapurna Studios and SS Creations, the film stars Nagarjuna Akkineni and Amala in lead roles. It also features Raghuvaran, JD Chakravarthy, Murali Mohan, Tanikella Bharani, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Shubhalekha Sudhakar, Gollapudi Maruthirao, Brahmaji, Uttej, Ram Jagan, and Nirmalamma in pivotal roles.
Story Overview
The movie follows Shiva (Nagarjuna Akkineni), a young student who moves to Hyderabad with his brother Sarath (Murali Mohan) and joins VAS College of Arts and Science. The college is under the control of local mafia don Bhavani Chowdhury (Raghuvaran), who uses his henchmen Ganesh (Vishwanath) and JD (JD Chakravarthy) to create chaos.
As college elections approach, Bhavani wants JD to become president unopposed. But when Naresh (Ram Jagan) dares to contest, he faces brutal attacks from Bhavani’s men. Witnessing this injustice, Shiva steps in to fight back and contests against JD with the support of labor leader Krishna Reddy, who opposes Bhavani’s dominance.
The story unfolds with intense twists — Shiva’s evolving relationship with Asha (Amala), his decision to move out of his brother’s house, and a shocking kidnapping incident that changes his life forever. The rest of the film showcases Shiva’s battle against Bhavani’s criminal empire and how he ultimately brings down the mafia network that controls the city.
A Film That Redefined Telugu Cinema
Ram Gopal Varma, inspired by The Godfather, crafted Shiva as his first directorial venture — an ambitious project that combined raw storytelling with stylish filmmaking. His unique vision convinced the traditionally conservative Annapurna Studios to produce a film that broke every norm of the time.
Upon its release, Shiva became a massive blockbuster, redefining Telugu filmmaking standards. It introduced a new visual style, realistic action, and urban storytelling. The film’s success created a clear divide in Telugu cinema history — “Before Shiva” and “After Shiva.”
With powerful cinematography by S. Gopal Reddy and unforgettable music by Ilaiyaraaja, Shiva remains a timeless masterpiece that inspired generations of directors, actors, and producers.
