Rain Alert: Cyclone ‘Montha’ Likely to Hit — Heavy Rains Forecast for These AP Districts

Amaravati: The Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain and storm alert for Andhra Pradesh as a new low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal continues to intensify. Officials have warned of widespread rains across several districts for the next five days.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is gradually moving west-northwest. It is expected to strengthen into a depression by Saturday (26th) and further develop into a cyclonic storm by October 27 over the southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal. If it intensifies into a cyclone, it will be named ‘Montha’, a name suggested by Thailand.

Heavy Rainfall Expected in Coastal and Rayalaseema Regions

The Amaravati Meteorological Center has predicted widespread rainfall across Andhra Pradesh for the next five days. On Friday, several areas experienced heavy downpours, with Amalapuram in Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district recording the highest rainfall of 6.3 cm.

According to APSDMA Managing Director Prakhar Jain, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in Konaseema, Krishna, Bapatla, Prakasam, SPS Nellore, and Tirupati districts today (Saturday).

Districts on High Alert for Heavy to Very Heavy Rains

The IMD has forecast that Guntur, Bapatla, Prakasam, Nellore, and Tirupati districts will experience heavy to hefty rainfall on Sunday.

Other districts such as Kakinada, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, West Godavari, Palnadu, YSR Kadapa, Annamayya, and Chittoor are also likely to receive moderate to heavy rains during the next 48 hours.

Wind and Thunderstorm Warnings Issued

Officials have cautioned that the approaching system could bring strong gusty winds, thunder, and lightning across several parts of the state. Citizens are advised to avoid venturing outdoors during heavy rain and take necessary safety measures.

Public Safety Advisory

Residents, especially those in low-lying and coastal areas, are urged to stay alert and move to safer locations if needed. The public is also advised to avoid staying under trees, near electric poles, or hoardings during strong winds and heavy rain.
