What is Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana?
Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) is a Government of India accident insurance scheme that provides financial protection against accidental death and disability at a very low premium. The scheme is designed to support economically vulnerable citizens by offering affordable insurance coverage.
PMSBY Premium Details
Annual Premium: ₹20 per member
Payment Mode: Auto-debit from bank or post office account
Debit Date: On or before 1st June every year
The premium amount is automatically deducted once consent is provided during enrollment.
Coverage Period
Insurance Validity: 1st June to 31st May (1 year)
Renewal happens automatically through auto-debit every year.
When Does PMSBY Coverage End?
The insurance cover will terminate or become invalid under the following conditions:
On attaining 70 years of age
Closure of bank/post office account
Insufficient account balance for premium deduction
Multiple enrollments (maximum cover limited to ₹2 lakh only)

Is hospitalization reimbursement covered?
No. PMSBY does not cover hospitalization expenses.
Who receives the claim amount after death?
The nominee or legal heir receives the insurance benefit.
How is the claim amount paid?
Disability claims → Credited to insured’s bank account
Death claims → Paid to nominee/legal heir
Is suicide covered under PMSBY?
No. Death due to suicide is not covered.
Is FIR mandatory for claim?
Yes, for road accidents, rail accidents, drowning, or crime-related deaths
Hospital records are sufficient for snake bites, falls, etc.
Is partial disability covered?
No. Only irrecoverable disability is eligible.
Can one person enroll through multiple bank accounts?
No. Only one PMSBY account per individual is allowed.
Can NRIs apply for PMSBY?
Yes, if they have a valid Indian bank account. Claims are paid only in Indian currency.
Does PMSBY cover natural calamities?
Yes. Death or disability due to earthquake, flood, cyclone, etc. is covered.
Is murder covered?
Yes.
