Justice Suryakant Takes Oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India: Key Guests and Highlights

Justice Suryakant officially assumed office as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) after taking oath at a grand ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The oath was administered by President Droupadi Murmu. Justice Suryakant will serve as the CJI for nearly 14 months, with his term ending on February 9, 2027.

The swearing-in ceremony witnessed the presence of several prominent leaders and dignitaries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda, Piyush Goyal, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, along with Governors, Chief Ministers, and Supreme Court and High Court judges attended the event. After the ceremony, Justice Suryakant greeted the guests and received blessings from his parents and family members.

 

Justice Suryakant: Early Life and Education

Born on 10 February 1962 in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Suryakant completed his schooling locally in 1981. He graduated from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar, and later obtained his law degree from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984.

He went on to complete his LLM from Kurukshetra University in 2011, securing First Class First in the course.

His legal career began at the Hisar District Court in 1984. A year later, he shifted to Chandigarh, where he actively practiced in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, gaining expertise in constitutional, civil, and service laws.

Known for his sharp arguments, he represented several universities, corporations, boards, and government institutions.

In July 2000, at the age of just 38, he made history by becoming the youngest Advocate General of Haryana.

Judicial Journey and Key Positions

2004: Appointed as Judge, Punjab and Haryana High Court

2018: Became Chief Justice, Himachal Pradesh High Court

2019: Elevated to the Supreme Court of India

During his tenure in the Supreme Court, Justice Suryakant delivered over 300 judgments, many involving critical constitutional, criminal, and administrative matters.

He was part of several significant constitutional benches, contributing to important judgments such as:

Abrogation of Article 370

Section 6A of the Citizenship Act

Powers of Governors and the President over state bills

Review of Vijay Madanlal Chowdhury judgment regarding ED powers under PMLA

Granting bail to former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in the CBI liquor policy case

Justice BR Gavai Retires

Justice BR Gavai, who served as the 52nd Chief Justice of India, retired on November 23. He took charge on May 14 and served for around seven months. Justice Suryakant succeeded him as per the seniority convention.
