India-Russia Strategic Alliance Reaffirmed at SCO Summit 2025
Tianjin, China – September 1, 2025: In a powerful display of diplomatic solidarity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a high-level bilateral meeting during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, reinforcing the historic and strategic partnership between India and Russia.
“India and Russia have always moved forward shoulder to shoulder—even in the toughest of times,” PM Modi declared, underscoring the resilience and depth of the relationship.
Strategic Unity Amid Global Tensions
The meeting comes at a critical juncture, as India faces steep 50% tariffs from the United States, including penalties for importing discounted Russian crude oil. Despite mounting pressure, India has stood firm, prioritizing its energy needs and sovereign decision-making.
PM Modi emphasized that India-Russia cooperation is essential not just for bilateral progress but for global peace and stability, calling the partnership “special and privileged”.
Ukraine War: A Call for Peace
Addressing the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, PM Modi welcomed recent peace initiatives and urged all stakeholders to engage constructively:
“Ending the conflict is the call of humanity. We hope all sides will work toward lasting peace,” he said.
President Putin, meanwhile, reiterated his stance that the crisis stemmed from a Western-backed coup in Kyiv, not a unilateral invasion.
Upcoming Summit in New Delhi
PM Modi also confirmed that President Putin will visit India in December 2025 for the 23rd Annual India-Russia Summit, stating:
“140 crore Indians are eagerly awaiting your arrival. This reflects the strength of our partnership”.
The leaders shared warm moments, traveling together to the meeting venue and exchanging insights on regional and global affairs.
SCO Summit Signals Shift Toward Multipolarity
The SCO Summit 2025 has emerged as a platform for redefining global governance. Chinese President Xi Jinping called for rejecting Cold War-era thinking and promoting fairness in international relations.
India’s active engagement with Russia and China at the summit signals a strategic pivot toward multipolar diplomacy, balancing traditional alliances with emerging partnerships.
