Hyderabad Floods: Musi River in Turmoil, City Under Water
Heavy rains have lashed Hyderabad, leading to severe flooding and a turbulent Musi River. The flood situation has caused major disruption across the city, affecting travel, infrastructure, and low-lying residential areas.
Key Areas and Infrastructure Affected
MGBS Bus Stand Flooded: The Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) has been severely inundated as heavy floodwater from the Musi entered the premises. This has stranded many passengers, though rescue operations were initiated by the GHMC, NDRF, and Hydra teams. Locals have complained about the sudden lifting of the Gandipet (Osman Sagar) gates without adequate warning, which contributed to the chaos.
Moosarambagh Bridge Closure and Damage: The Moosarambagh bridge has been closed due to the intensifying floods. Furthermore, the construction site of the new high-level bridge adjacent to the existing one saw significant damage, with the centering iron rods and support structures being washed away by the strong current.
Traffic Disruption: Traffic has come to a standstill between Dilsukhnagar and Amberpet. Several roads, including the entire Puranapool, Jiyaguda, and the 100-foot road, have been closed by the police due to submergence.
ORR Service Road Rescue: Teams from Hydra and NDRF rescued several individuals trapped in an auto trolley on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) service road between Narsingi and Manchirevula.
Low-Lying Areas Submerged and Alerts Issued
The situation escalated after the gates of both Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs were lifted to release excess water, significantly swelling the Musi River.
Residential Flooding: Houses in areas like Ambedkar Nagar near the Moosarambagh bridge were inundated.
Old City Impacts: The historic Puranapool area was heavily affected. The crematorium was completely submerged, and the Chakalibanda Shiva statue was reportedly underwater. Police had previously issued warnings for people to stay away from the catchment areas.
Evacuations: Over 1,000 people in low-lying areas along the Musi catchment were alerted and successfully shifted to temporary rehabilitation centers as a precautionary measure.
Tragic Discovery
The body of Rama, who was washed away in the Afzal Sagar drain on September 14th along with Arjun, was tragically found in the Musi river near Nagole on Friday night. Authorities recovered the body for a postmortem. Arjun’s body had been previously found in Valigonda.
Weather Forecast and Alerts
The Meteorological Department has warned that extremely heavy rains are expected to continue today due to a prevailing depression. An Orange Alert has been issued for several districts, including Nirmal, Nizamabad, Hanumakonda, Siddipet, Yadadri, Medak, Kamareddy, and Mahabubnagar, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
