Delhi Police Registers FIR Against Sonia & Rahul Gandhi
Delhi Police FIR Sonia and Rahul: The Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has formally filed an FIR naming Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, along with several others, including Young Indian (YI), former party officials, and two private firms. The case pertains to alleged financial irregularities related to the assets of Associated Journals Limited (AJL), which publishes National Herald.
What the FIR Alleges
The FIR accuses the above individuals and entities of criminal conspiracy (IPC Section 120B), misappropriation of property (Section 403), breach of trust (Section 406), and cheating (Section 420). Authorities contend that AJL’s assets—estimated to be worth around ₹2,000 crore—were illicitly acquired by YI and other parties, in exchange for a purported loan of ₹90 crore.
Money Laundering Angle: Role of the Enforcement Directorate (ED)
Following the FIR, the Enforcement Directorate has initiated money-laundering proceedings under Section 66(2) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). This provision permits the ED to open a money-laundering case once a predicate offence has been registered by a law-enforcement agency, enabling a deeper probe into the alleged financial crimes.
Background: Charged Earlier, Now FIR Registered
A chargesheet in this matter was previously filed by the ED in April of this year against many of the same accused. The fresh FIR by Delhi Police aims to criminally document the alleged wrongdoing — adding a new dimension to the ongoing investigation.
Response from Congress & Next Steps
The accused — including the Gandhis — have strongly denied all allegations, calling them politically motivated and baseless. Meanwhile, the next hearing in the case is scheduled for 16 December, as per court records.
