Air India Ahmedabad-London Plane Crash: In a devastating aviation tragedy, Air India Flight AI-117 from Ahmedabad to London crashed shortly after takeoff on Thursday, June 12, 2025, resulting in the deaths of 241 out of 242 people on board. The crash of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner has become one of the worst air disasters in Indian aviation history.
Air India: Flight Crashes Minutes After Takeoff Near B.J. Medical College Hostel
The aircraft took off at 1:38 PM from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and within five minutes, it nosedived into the B.J. Medical College hostel mess, located just 5 km away. At the time, over 100 students were gathered for lunch when the explosion occurred, causing panic and injuries among several students.
A massive blast followed by thick black smoke was visible across the city, indicating the catastrophic impact of the crash. Witnesses reported the terrifying sound and shockwaves felt in nearby areas.
Air India: Mayday Call Issued Before Crash, No Response After
Airport officials confirmed that the pilots had issued a ‘Mayday’ distress signal shortly after takeoff, signaling a critical emergency. However, all communication was lost thereafter, and the plane crashed before any emergency landing could be attempted.
Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani Among the Dead
Among the deceased was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was on board the flight. His death has led to a wave of mourning across the state and the country. Numerous leaders and political figures have expressed their condolences over the tragic loss.
Only One Survivor: Vishwaskumar Ramesh in Seat A11
The sole survivor of the crash has been identified as Vishwaskumar Ramesh, who was seated in A11. He was traveling to London with his brother, who unfortunately did not survive. Vishwaskumar is currently receiving treatment in a local hospital.
PM Modi and Amit Shah Visit Hospital, Assure Full Support
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site in Ahmedabad to oversee the rescue operations and later met the lone survivor in the hospital. He expressed deep grief and offered condolences to the families of the victims.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who also visited the survivor, stated:
“Due to the presence of 1.25 lakh litres of aviation fuel and the high-intensity explosion, no other passengers could be rescued.”
Air India, DGCA Launch Full Investigation
Air India has confirmed the death toll and expressed condolences, promising full cooperation with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and other authorities in the investigation. Experts are looking into possible technical failure or engine malfunction as likely causes.
