BCCI Ultimatum to Rohit and Kohli: Play Domestic Cricket or Lose Team India Spot

BCCI ultimatum to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli: After the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as Team India’s head coach and Ajit Agarkar as the chief selector, the dynamics of team selection have changed drastically. The new management is focusing on fitness, consistency, and domestic performance — even for senior players.

New Rule: Play Domestic to Stay Eligible

According to reports, the BCCI has instructed senior players that participation in domestic tournaments is mandatory to maintain match fitness and be considered for national selection. This directive especially applies to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who are now limited to ODI cricket after retiring from Tests.

Rohit Sharma to Play Vijay Hazare Trophy for Mumbai

Following this instruction, Rohit Sharma has confirmed his availability to play for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, starting December 24 in Jaipur. It marks his return to domestic cricket after many years, showcasing his commitment to staying in contention for Team India’s ODI plans.

Kohli Yet to Respond

On the other hand, Virat Kohli, who is currently in London with his family, has not yet made an official announcement about his participation. He underwent a fitness test in London before the Australia tour and was in good form, scoring a half-century in the final ODI.

Now, all eyes are on whether Kohli will return to India to represent his state in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His decision could influence his future in Team India’s ODI setup.

Changing Era in Indian Cricket

Under Gambhir’s leadership, the focus is clear — performance over reputation. Even established names like Ravichandran Ashwin have stepped away from international cricket amid this new direction. With younger players getting more opportunities, the senior duo of Rohit and Kohli may need to prove their fitness and form through domestic cricket.
