In a major decision that brings cheer to lakhs of government staff, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the formation of the 8th Pay Commission.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the new commission will review and recommend revisions in the pay structure of over 50 lakh central government employees.

The newly formed commission will be chaired by Retired Supreme Court Judge Justice Ranjana Desai and will include two other members. It has been given 18 months to submit its final report.

7th Pay Commission to End in 2026

The tenure of the 7th Pay Commission will officially end in 2026. The central government had earlier announced plans to set up the 8th Pay Commission in January this year. Ahead of its formation, the government held detailed consultations with central ministries and employee representatives to finalize the framework for pay revision.

₹38,000 Crore Fertilizer Subsidy Announced for Farmers

Apart from the Pay Commission approval, the Cabinet also announced a nutrient-based fertilizer subsidy worth ₹38,000 crore for the Rabi season.

Ashwini Vaishnaw said this move aims to support farmers and promote the use of modern and sustainable agricultural methods across the country.
